Indy Eleven Suffers First Defeat of 2015 at Jacksonville
Indiana’s Team Shutout on the Road in 0-1 Loss to Armada FC
JACKSONVILLE, FL (Saturday, May 9, 2015) – Indy Eleven saw its nine-game undefeated run dating back to last October snapped tonight in Florida, as a second half goal from Jacksonville Armada FC midfielder Bochy Hoyos marked the game’s lone tally in a 1-0 Armada FC victory in front of 8,318 at Community First Park. The loss, the first of Indy Eleven’s 2015 NASL Spring Season, pushed its record to 1W-3D-1L.
Jacksonville set the tone throughout a hectic first 45 minutes, and the home side would earn close to 10 corner kicks as a result of repeated forays into the Indy Eleven defensive third. But it was shots from the run of play that would cause the most fits, as defender Matt Bahner forced Indy Eleven goalkeeper Keith Cardona – making his professional debut between the posts – into his first save in the 6th minute, while Lucas Scaglia missed just wide left from distance in the 25th minute.
The “Boys in Blue” would bend but not break, absorbing the near constant pressure by Jacksonville before finally showing some attacking impetus of its own in the final 10 minutes of the half. Striker Wojciech Wojcik would test Jacksonville ‘keeper Miguel Gallardo’s near post in the 36th minute, and midfielder Osman Melgares curled his free kick from 25 yards in the 44thminute just wide of the left post, keeping things scoreless heading into the halftime break.
Jacksonville was unlucky not to go up right off the second half kickoff, as midfielder Lucas Rodriguez chipped just high after beating multiple defenders inside the Indy Eleven penalty area. But Indy Eleven wouldn’t escape harm four minutes later, as Bochy readjusted on Bahner’s cross from the right endline, nodding a shot from four yards out past Cardona to put Jacksonville up 1-0.
The goal seemed to wake up the Indy Eleven attack, and Wojcik was unlucky not to even up less than two minutes later, his shot from the top of the area parried over by Gallardo. While the visitors were able to possess the ball more and more as the half progressed, quality chances were few and far between, a last-minute, near-angle chance by defender Greg Janicki after beating an offside trap serving as the best opportunity to square the match across the final half hour of play.
Despite the defeat, Indy Eleven remains square in the middle of the Spring Season on six points from five games, tied with the Carolina RailHawks and Minnesota United FC after today’s results. Indy Eleven will return to its home of IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium next Saturday, May 16, when it welcomes Minnesota for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Military Appreciation Night at “The Mike” (live on WISH-TV 8, ESPN3.com and Exitos Radio 1590AM).
