Indy Eleven's Last Time Out – Indy Eleven 5 : 2 Jacksonville Armada FC
Indiana's Team kept the ball rolling in the Fall Season with a 5-2 thrashing of Jacksonville Armada FC midweek at Carroll Stadium.
Forward Justin Braun got the party started in the 13th minute, taking a pass from Dylan Mares and dancing around the penalty area before beating Armada FC 'keeper Sean Lewis to his left to take the lead, and things only escalated from there. Just three minutes later, forward Eamon Zayed bagged his first goal of the night, this time taking a pass from midfielder Don Smart and finishing calmly to put the Eleven two-nil up. Jacksonville showed signs of life just after the half hour mark when attacker Alhassane Keita pulled one back and beat Eleven 'netminder Jon Busch in the 33rd minute, but Eleven left-back Nemanja Vukovic would restore the two goal lead just three minutes later with a half volley that found the lower right corner of the goal.
The second half was no easier for Armada FC as Eamon Zayed would add goals in the 58th minute (assisted by Justin Braun) and the 65th minute to complete his impressive hat-trick, and Colin Falvey's own goal in the 80th minute would act as minor consolation. The win bounced Indy back to the top of all three tables (Spring, Fall & Combined) and sees them continue their push for a fall championship.
Ottawa Fury FC's Last Time Out – Ottawa Fury FC 2 : 0 Tampa Bay Rowdies
Ottawa Fury FC knocked off the Tampa Bay Rowdies 2-0 at home for their third straight win, all by the same score.
Mallan Roberts got things off on the right foot for the hosts when he tallied the opening goal just two minutes in off a pass from midfielder Mauro Eustaquio, and an own goal by Rowdies defender Tamika Mkandawire in the 36th minute only added to the visitors' misery to see them down two-nil at half.
The score would not change in the final 45 minutes, and both teams deserve credit for pushing through their third games of the week respectively.
After losing their opening three games of the Fall Season, Ottawa has bounced back to take all nine points from their last three fixtures and now the Canadian side comes to Carroll Stadium after a week of recovery and training.
Two Completely Different Sides
When Ottawa last came to Indianapolis for the 2016 Spring Season home opener in April, temperatures were near frigid, the pitch had yet to be broken in after a long winter, and both sides were a long way from their potential. Little did Indy know, despite the one-all scoreline at the end of the 90 minutes, they would not lose a single game the rest of the spring and be (officially) crowned champions on June 12 after beating Carolina the day before.
Since neither head coach Tim Hankinson nor head coach Paul Dalglish had seen their side peak, Saturday night's battle will be completely different from that of April. Coach Hankinson, for example, has added a few players to his roster, as has Dalglish, and has changed his formation to suit two strikers. Meanwhile, the Canadian club has gone from unimpressive to legitimate threat in the fall season in just one week, winning all three matches played at the end of July.
Indy Eleven Player to Watch: FW Justin Braun
Braun was also our player to watch midweek, and he showed his ability to exploit space and create chances, scoring one and assisting one in the 5-2 win. Coach Hankinson had called upon the attacker prior to the match saying that he was looking for a little more action from one of his many offseason signings, and after extra work put in on the training ground after the rest had gone home, Braun displayed what he is capable of.
Saturday's game will be just as important for him, however, as Fury FC are riding a three-game shutout streak and will look to squeeze out the tandem of Braun and Zayed from getting space in front of goal. The attacker will have to be on his toes and ready to strike at a moment's notice, just like he was on Wednesday against Armada FC.
Ottawa Fury FC Player to Watch: DEF Rafael Alves
Though the teams are different as a whole since their last meeting in April, one player has stuck out consistently for the Canadian side: defender Rafael Alves. Four months ago, Alves was at the center of a four-back system at Carroll Stadium and starred in defense winning four of four challenges and 11/14 duels, but now acts as a stalwart in the middle of a back three for Coach Dalglish's side.
Guiding Ottawa to three straight shutouts while commanding the defense, Alves will be a key figure responsible for handling both Braun and Zayed with the assistance of his other central defenders on Saturday night.
Matchup to Mark: DEF Colin Falvey/Cory Miller vs. FW Thomas Stewart/Carl Haworth
With Greg Janicki missing due to suspension, the duo of Colin Falvey, who is recovering from injury, and Cory Miller will take charge of the defense facing an attack (likely) made up of Thomas Stewart and Carl Haworth, who have scored six goals between the two of them.
With the skipper Falvey sidelined, Miller has seen plenty of action in recent weeks alongside Janicki but will now partner up with the Irishman after a late red card was shown Wednesday night to Indy's No.12. With the help of Nemanja Vukovic and one of Lovel Palmer and Marco Franco, they will be tasked with keeping Fury FC off the scoresheet.
