Indy Eleven will enter the second round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on the road against Mississippi Brilla FC on Wednesday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. ET. This first meeting between the two opponents comes after the “Boys in Blue’s” regular season draw, 0-0, against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
Indy Eleven holds a 2W-4L record in the four seasons the team has appeared in the tournament. This time around, “Indiana’s Team’s” fifth appearance in the tournament will be under head coach Martin Rennie. The Scotsman holds a .500 record in U.S. Open Cup play, having won five of the ten games he’s coached in the tournament. The “Boys in Blue” have never made it past the fourth round of the tournament, as Rennie aims to change that.
USL PDL’s Mississippi Brilla FC is participating in U.S. Open Cup play for the fourth time in team history since being founded in 2007. Brilla FC defeated NPSL side New Orleans Jesters last week in the first round, 3-2 in a penalty shootout, after playing ending the first 90 minutes tied, 1-1. Mississippi head coach Mark McKeever attempts to do something no other Brilla FC coach has done- take his team past the second round of the Open Cup.
If the “Boys in Blue” defeat Mississippi in the second round the third round fixture will take place seven days later on May 23 against either USL’s Nashville SC or NPSL’s Inter Nashville FC
The longest running tournament in U.S. soccer is now in its 105th edition. Overall, 94 teams across all divisions of U.S. soccer will participate in this year’s U.S. Open Cup. The tournament consists of a qualifying round followed by five rounds of fixtures. After the fifth round is complete, the quarterfinals begin on July 18, with the tournament concluding on September 26, the day of the final.
