INDIANAPOLIS (October 21, 2017) – With just two games left in the 2017 season, Indy Eleven fell, 2-1, to “La Naranja” in another close encounter at Carroll Stadium.
The visitors shook things up inside the opening five minutes as forward Sidney Rivera pounced on a chance in the box and beat Indy Eleven goalkeeper Keith Cardona from close range, who was making just his second appearance in goal for the “Boys in Blue.”
Indy forward Eamon Zayed responded with a chance of his own just past the half-hour mark in an attempt to pull his side level. Rushing through on goal, Zayed had a sliding attempt saved by PRFC ‘keeper Austin Pack after Paulo Junior had snuck a pass between the lines with no follow-up effort on goal. Then, things went from bad to worse for “Indiana’s Team” with a 43rd-minute goal from forward Emery Welshman. Taking a pass from Ramos, Welshman hit a roller towards Cardona that took a harsh deflection in finding the back of the net.
At the break, Indy Eleven trailed, 2-0.
A second half with few chances for either side, Welshman and midfielder Jordi Quintilla had chances saved by Cardona as Indy’s search for their first continued. Fortunately, that goal would come in the 82nd minute thanks to forward David Goldsmith. Midfielder Tanner Thompson raced forward after having his number called as a 60th-minute substitute and got to the byline around the defense. Sending in a low cross, “Goldie” was there to knock in the effort from point-blank range to pull one back.
Despite the late push, Indy would not find an equalizer and split results in the month of October with Puerto Rico FC, losing 2-1 in the second-to-last match of the year.
Indy Eleven returns home to IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium to host North Carolina FC on Sunday, October 29 at 5:00 P.M. ET for the regular season finale. Tickets for the game can be purchased for as little as $11 online at www.www.indyeleven.com or by phone at 317-685-1100.
