JACKSONVILLE (April 29, 2017) – Indy Eleven collected their fifth point of the 2017 season in a 1-1 draw with the league leaders, Jacksonville Armada FC, in a steamy Saturday night encounter at Hodges Stadium.
Welcoming Daniel Keller back into the lineup in place of Nemanja Vukovic, Indy Eleven took the pitch on the attacking front in the opening minutes. The first opportunity of the night fell the way of midfielder Brad Ring in the 13th minute when defender Colin Falvey headed a corner kick towards goal only for the ball to bounce to the right foot of Ring. However, unleashing a pacy effort, Ring’s shot was blocked out and away. Continuing their high press, Indy pestered Jacksonville for the next ten minutes and would get their reward before the half hour mark.
Forward Eamon Zayed held up play and threaded a beautiful pass in for fellow forward Justin Braun, and Braun would take two touches to round Armada FC ‘keeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell before tapping home to open the scoring. The goal sent Braun back to the top of the league scoring charts and also saw him overtake former Indy Eleven midfielder Dylan Mares for second all-time on the Indy Eleven scoring list.
However, the hosts would find their lone goal of the night just five minutes later off a free kick on the right flank. Standing over the set piece, midfielder Jack Blake swung in a perfect ball for teammate Jonathan Glenn to get on the end of, and the forward made no mistake beating Busch to his right to equalize.
A testy second half saw Indy continue pressing the opposition all the way back to the ‘keeper, and it took just ten minutes for another quality opportunity to fall their way. Midfielder Craig Henderson sought the run of Justin Braun, but as the forward let the ball bounce it ricocheted off the forehead of midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic and towards goal. The odd bounce forced a good save from Patterson-Sewell, but the match stayed level.
As the heat began to affect both sides, neither would find another quality opportunity on goal before the final whistle. However, Indy Eleven would allot the final few minutes to forward David Goldsmith, who made his professional debut on the night, and the “Boys in Blue” picked up another important point on the road.
Indiana’s Team returns home to IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium to host FC Edmonton on Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 P.M. ET. Tickets for the game – and all remaining 14 NASL matches at “The Mike” in 2017 – can be purchased for as little as $11 online at www.www.indyeleven.com or by phone at 317-685-1100.
