Fulltime Recap – FC Edmonton 0 : 1 Indy Eleven
Kleberson’s Second Half Stoppage Time Winner Pushes Indy Eleven to Third Place in Fall Season Standings, Road Undefeated Streak to Four Games
EDMONTON (Sunday, July 27, 2014) – FC Edmonton took to its brand new turf at Clarke Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but it was the visiting Indy Eleven that got the home bounces and walked away with the full three points courtesy of a thrilling 1-0 victory.
Indy Eleven midfielder Kleberson continued his standout play to begin the NASL Fall Season by scoring deep into second half stoppage time, exacting revenge for a loss in a similar late fashion last weekend at home against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Kleberson’s fifth goal of the year tied him with Mike Ambersley for the team lead and at the same time pushed the club’s unbeaten streak on the road in NASL play to four games, including back-to-back wins at Edmonton and Carolina to begin the Fall campaign.
With the win, Indy Eleven (2W-1L-0T, 6 pts. in Fall Season; 2-6-4, 10 pts. overall) jumped up to 3rd place in the NASL’s Fall standings and leaped Edmonton (0-2-1, 1 pt. in Fall; 2-7-3, 9 pts. overall) on the overall NASL season table to take over the 9th spot, now sitting one point behind fellow expansion partner Ottawa Fury FC. The win also marked Indy Eleven’s first shutout in club history, courtesy of goalkeeper Kristian Nicht’s handful of important plays between the posts – and sometimes off of them – on the day.
FC Edmonton had a jump in their step early in the first half with a few solid opportunities. Lance Laing got a chance in the 3rd minute after a defensive misfire from Indy Eleven led to a low cross inside the penalty area, but Laing fired it just wide of the post. Minutes later, a high cross into the box found the head of Horace James, who put it just over the crossbar.
The first half continued to be all Eddies as they kept the majority of the possession and boasted the best scoring opportunities of either side. When Indy did get in close with some chances, FCE ‘keeper John Smits stood up to the challenge with a couple highlight worthy saves on midfielder Blake Smith, who twice broke in on the left side of the area in the first quarter-hour, only to be denied by the Eddies’ netminder.
It looked as though Edmonton was finally going to get on the board in the 19th minute when a through ball from James found a streaking Laing, who had the room on the left flank and clipped a shot over Nicht that rang off the crossbar and out. Not two minutes later, a Neil Hlavaty strike from the top of the eighteen had a similar fate as it looked like the Eddies could beat everything but the woodwork in the first half. The amount of scoring opportunities tapered off in the last 20 minutes and the teams traded possession for the rest of the half, with neither team finding the back of the net.
The 83rd minute saw the best opportunity of the second half for Edmonton when a newly subbed-on Michael Nonni cranked a ball after a run up the right side, but a familiar storyline dictated the outcome as Nicht got a touch on it and it deflected off the crossbar for the third time in the match.
It was in the three minutes of added extra time that the deadlock was finally broken. After FC Edmonton failed to clear a corner kick opportunity by Indy Eleven, the ball popped out 10 yards from goal to Kleberson, who made no mistake by tucking a low, left-footed shot inside the far right post to give the visitors a huge three points and an early boost up the NASL Fall Season standings.
Indy Eleven will look to carry its momentum from the road into a pair of upcoming home contests within four days’ time, starting on Saturday, August 2, against the Atlanta Silverbacks on Back to School Night at Carroll Stadium (7:30 p.m. kickoff), with the first 3,000 fans through the gates at “The Mike” receiving a free Rally Towel courtesy of WGU Indiana.
Then on Wednesday, August 6, Indy Eleven gets right back at it when Indiana’s Team plays host to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers for another 7:30 p.m. start on “Happy Hour Night” and “Service Industry Night” at Carroll Stadium. INDY ELEVEN HEAD COACH JUERGEN SOMMER
"We knew coming here it would be a competitive match and one goal could decide it. We knew we'd have our hands full today and it could have gone either way. We were fortunate with our finishing piece in the 90th minute. We did well and came away with the three points today."
FC EDMONTON HEAD COACH COLIN MILLER
“We were sloppy defensively in the second half and it came back to bite us," said Miller. "This was a hard one for us because we had enough chances to win a couple games to be honest with you, never mind one game."
