Midfielder Don Smart Tallies First Goal of Preseason in 64th Minute to Level for “Boys in Blue”

 
EVANSVILLE (Wednesday, March 16, 2016) – For the second straight game, Indy Eleven would grab a second half equalizer, this time midfielder Don Smart doing the honor with a 64th minute strike that countered a goal out of the halftime gate by Saint Louis FC in a 1-1 draw at Arad McCutcheon Stadium on the campus of the University of Evansville.

On a windy evening in Southwest Indiana, Indy Eleven would take some time to get into the match possession-wise, but goalkeeper Jon Busch would be on from the get-go for the “Boys in Blue.” The veteran netminder was forced into three saves in the opening 30 minutes, the best coming in the 16th minute when he bent low to bat down and handle Jamiel Hardware’s 25-yard free kick that snuck through the Eleven four-man wall.

Indy Eleven would get its best looks back to back in the 25th minute, but trialist forward Jair Reinoso was shouldered off a through ball in the area by Saint Louis goalkeeper Mark Pais before midfielder Duke Lacroix saw a second try on the push forward miss wide.

After a scoreless first half, it wouldn’t take long to move the scoreboard in the second 45 minutes as Saint Louis FC forward Irvin Herrera took away the ball from an Eleven defender in the final third and carried behind the backline before slotting low and right of Busch to give the USL side the 1-0 lead 25 seconds out of the locker room.

For the second straight game giving up the first goal seemed to energize the Eleven attack, paying off in the 64th minute with Smart’s first of the preseason. The play began when Lacroix pushed up the middle of the field and into the penalty area before deftly laying off for Smart, who lashed a first-time blast into the upper right corner from 12 yards out to even things up.

That would mark the final shot on goal for either side as the teams would settle for a share of the spoils out of the first ever professional exhibition game played in the River City.

Indy Eleven will continue its spring exhibition schedule this Saturday, March 19, with a scrimmage against its fourth USL foe of the preseason in Louisville City FC. The closed-door affair in the Indianapolis area will take place at 2:00 p.m.  ET. Forward Eamon Zayed’s Second Goal of Preseason Levels in 85th Minute

 
INDIANAPOLIS (Saturday, March 12, 2016) – Indy Eleven forward Eamon Zayed’s 85th minute equalizer cancelled out Luke Spencer’s 64thminute opener for FC Cincinnati in a 1-1 draw in preseason exhibition play this afternoon at the University of Indianapolis’ Key Stadium.

After both teams felt things out in the midfield during the first ten minutes, it was FC Cincinnati enjoying the apparent best first chance 15 minutes in when Corben Bone’s ball deep into the area found Sean Okoli, but his skied chance from eight yards out was nullified regardless for offside. At the half hour mark it was Okoli again lurking dangerously inside the Eleven area, but Indy ‘keeper Jon Busch darted off his line and slid in to take the chance off the attacker’s foot.

The “Boys in Blue” got their first look of note in the 33rd minute, which started with defender Lovel Palmer’s looped cross from the right flank. After headers across the six by Zayed and midfielder Gorka Larrea, the ball fell to forward Wojciech Wojcik, whose shot on the doorstep was turned away by FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Dallas Jaye’s fine kick save.

Cincinnati would earn a pair of chances in the 38th minute, but Busch would come up big 1-v-1 kick with a kick save of his own after Okoli got into the top of the area. Kenney Walker’s follow up from 20 yards missed just over the crossbar, although Busch looked to have that one covered as well after retreating to his line. A minute later it was Indy’s turn to push, but Zayed’s shot to the near right post was covered by Jaye, the rebound cleared out for a corner.

The home side got the first good look of the second half after winger Duke Lacroix was chopped down on a run just outside the area, but defender Nemanja Vukovic’s free kick into the mixer was nodded out of play from the edge of the six.

A little past the hour mark FC Cincinnati would get on the board first through Spencer, who stole the ball in the final third and bodied his way inside Eleven defender Greg Janicki to gain space before blasting a low shot inside the far left post and past a diving Keith Cardona in goal.

Indy Eleven midfielder Brad Ring nearly found the equalizer in the 71st minute when he ran onto defender Marco Franco’s pass to the top of the arc and fired a blast that forced Jaye into a diving, two-handed parry around the left post. In the 81st minute it was Franco pushing the action again, switching right to an open Dragan Stojkov, the midfielder sending his shot to a waiting Jaye on his line. Sixty seconds later, winger Justin Braun got to the endline and cut back a pass to the penalty spot, but Lacroix couldn’t adjust his run enough to keep his shot down and on frame.

Indy finally broke through five minutes from time, the opportunity starting on the left flank with Janicki putting Lacroix into space. A fine first touch pushed the second-year man past his defender, and his next touch was a cross to the top of the six that Zayed dove to knee level to reach, redirecting inside the right post to even things up. Two minutes from time it was Braun having the best chance to give the Eleven the win, but his shot from 12 yards out was turned away by Jaye to keep things at 1-1.

The share of the spoils from the first meeting between the “Boys in Blue” and the expansion USL side from Cincinnati pushes Indy Eleven’s preseason record to 1-2-2 with four games remaining in the next two weeks. Indy Eleven will stay in the Hoosier State for its next exhibition contest this Wednesday, March 16, when it heads southwest for its first trip to Evansville to meet halfway with another USL foe, St. Louis FC. Indy Eleven Ends Arizona Stay with 0-1 Defeat to OC Blues FC

Physical Game Sees USL Side Score Lone Tally in First Half

CASA GRANDE, ARIZONA (Monday, March 7, 2016) – Indy Eleven pressed to recreate the second half scoring punch it enjoyed on Friday, but couldn’t find an equalizer against Orange County Blues FC in a 0-1 defeat at the Grande Sports World complex. The result ended an eight-day stay in Arizona for the “Boys in Blue,” who will head back to Indianapolis tomorrow to continue their preseason preparations.

A physical 90 minutes began with OC Blues having the better of the chances, although no shots would test Eleven goalkeeper Jon Busch until he made a fine one-handed save at his right post in the 19th minute.

The USL side looked to employ long balls over the Indy backline on the windy evening, and the tactic worked in the 36th minute when a Blues FC attacker got goal side on an Eleven defender while chasing down a 60-yard ball from the back. With Busch forced to come off his line, the attacker chipped the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper and into the upper right corner to move the scoreboard for Orange County.

Indy Eleven’s best chance of the first half came four minutes later. Midfielder Don Smart whipped in a low cross from the right flank, but the pass skipped through the six-yard box and just past the runs of both midfielder Duke Lacroix and forward Wojciech Wojcik, the latter who got the start after his hat trick Friday versus Arizona United FC.

While the second half was controlled largely by the “Boys in Blue,” halftime substitute goalkeeper Keith Cardona would be pressed into action early in the 48th minute, first punching a drilled effort from the right side of the area into the ground before holding on to a hard shot from 20 yards out that followed.

Wojcik’s teammates would start to find him soon after, with guest midfielder Mike Klain supplying a pair of fine crosses from the right in the 52nd and 53rd minutes to create chances, the first missing just wide and the second forcing the Blues backstop into a save. In the 64th minute it was midfielder Dragan Stojkov providing a cutback cross from the left endline, but “Woj” would be robbed from the corner of the six by a leaping, one-handed stop.

The chances would dry up for both sides in the last 20 minutes, but Indy still managed to ask some questions of the Blues defense down the stretch. Upfield for a set piece, defender Greg Janicki nearly nodded home midfielder Dylan Mares’ free kick in the 72nd minute, while Lacroix’s near angle shot off Smart’s far post cross in the 84th minute would force one last save.

After returning home Tuesday, Indy Eleven will stay inside the Hoosier State for the remainder of its build up to its 2016 NASL season opener on Saturday, April 2, at the Tampa Bay Rowdies.  The squad will resume exhibition action this Saturday, March 12, in the Indianapolis area with a closed-door scrimmage against new USL side FC Cincinnati at 11:00 a.m. ET. Indy Eleven Attack Explodes in 4-0 win Over Arizona United

All Tallies Come in Second Half, Paced by Forward Wojciech Wojcik’s Hat Trick

 
CASA GRANDE, ARIZONA (Friday, March 4, 2016) – Indy Eleven forward Wojciech Wojcik registered a hat trick and winger Duke Lacroix added another goal – all in the second half – to pace the Hoosier State squad to a 4-0 victory over USL side Arizona United FC in exhibition play at the Grande Sports World complex.

Indy Eleven would be the aggressor in the opening stages of a first half that saw it enjoy the better of the few quality chances created by the two sides. However, it was United getting the first real dangerous looks in the 15th minute, when Jose Cuevas collected a rebounded shot, only to scuff the chance in space from 10 yards out.

Four minutes later Indy could have opened the scoring when Lacroix’s hustle allowed him reach a ball on the endline and bend back a cross for Eamon Zayed, but after sizing the ball up at the far post the striker headed the chance just wide.

The second half was Indy Eleven’s undoing in Wednesday’s defeat to Ottawa Fury FC, but the “Boys in Blue” flipped the script today with a four-spot in the second 45 minutes. It was Wojcik getting on the board first, heading guest midfielder Mike Klain’s cross from the right endline off the underside of the crossbar from the top of the six-yard box in the 55th minute.

Arizona nearly found an equalizer in the 65th minute when an attacker, on the turf after tangling with Indy defender Marco Franco, still managed to get a shot off from inside the six that forced a point-blank save by Eleven netminder Keith Cardona.

Lacroix would get a well-earned goal just before exiting the match in the 69th minute, making no mistake with a low shot to the left post after a deflected through ball popped to him in space 15 yards out. Just two minutes later it was Wojcik causing havoc again, reaping the reward from the corner he drew with a saved shot seconds earlier by accepting midfielder Dylan Mares’ recycled ball and hammering home from close range to make it 3-0.

Wojcik would complete the hat trick in the 80th minute by finishing off a well-worked break down the left flank. Midfielder Nicki Paterson picked out the center channel run by Wojcik, who collected and calmly finished from 15 yards out to finish off the scoring.

With the team’s Casa Grande nine-day trip now more than halfway complete, Indy Eleven will get a couple more days of work in before finishing the exhibition portion of the stay with Monday’s game against another USL side, Orange County Blues FC, at 8:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. local MT). CASA GRANDE, ARIZONA (Wednesday, March 2, 2016) – It was a tale of two halves for Indy Eleven in its proper preseason opener today against fellow NASL squad Ottawa Fury FC, as the Canadian side scored all of its goals in a 3-0 win during the second 45 minutes.

The match, the first of three for Indy Eleven across the next week at the Grande Sports World training complex, was the first full-field, 11-v-11 run out for the squad during the 2016 preseason and comes a month out from the 2016 NASL regular season opener at Tampa Bay on Saturday, April 2.

“I was quite pleased with the progress the first group made from last Friday’s scrimmage (at IU) to today. We had the better of the play and chances in the first 45 minutes, which is an encouraging sign,” said Indy Eleven head coach Tim Hankinson. “The second half was clearly not what we were looking for, especially defensively. It showed that there’s a lot to work on still, but that is what the preseason is all about.”

After a feeling out period across the first 10 minutes, Indy Eleven started to take hold of the proceedings with repeated forays into the final third. New forward Eamon Zayed proved to be a handful around the quarter hour but couldn’t convert a pair of opportunities. Winger Justin Braun had the best chance of the half in the 26th minute, nodding Zayed’s back post cross on frame only to see Fury FC ‘keeper Marcel DeBellis scurry across his line to keep it out of goal.

A few minutes later it was Kyle Porter barging forward to take the best look of the half for Ottawa, but the defender sprayed his shot from 10 yards out wide after finding plenty of space in the right side of the Eleven area. Indy Eleven would have a handful of dangerous looking set pieces in the final quarter hour of the half, but couldn’t push one past DeBellis, leaving things scoreless.

Indy’s second group continued to play things even through the first 15 minutes of the second half, but an 11-minute stretch just after the hour mark would see Ottawa do all of its damage. The barrage started in the 63rd minute when Fury FC forward Pablo Dyego achieved the endline and cut back a pass for Paulo Junior, who slotted a low shot from 12 yards out inside the far left post to open the scoring.

Three minutes later it was Dyego creating havoc again after being played down the right flank and into the top of the Eleven area. From there he caught Keith Cardona between two minds, chipping past the stranded Indy goalkeeper and into the upper left 90 to double the Ottawa lead.

In the 73rd minute it was Paulo Junior creating a kick from the penalty spot when he was fouled inside the area by a recovering Greg Janicki. A minute later it was Gerardo Bruna converting the PK by going low and left, pushing the score to its eventual 3-0 finish.

Indy Eleven won’t have much time to dwell on today’s result, as it will continue its nine-day stay in Casa Grande with a scrimmage against the Arizona United of the USL on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. ET (3:00 p.m. local). Forward Eamon Zayed Nets Goal for “Boys in Blue” in 9-v-9 Affair versus Hoosiers

 
BLOOMINGTON, IN (Friday, February 26, 2016) – Indy Eleven opened the exhibition portion of its 2016 preseason with a 1-1 draw against the Indiana University Hoosiers this evening in a 9-v-9 scrimmage played at the Mellencamp Pavilion on the Bloomington campus.

Indy Eleven head coach Tim Hankinson elected to start the match with mostly new additions to the squad, with Brad Ring the only incumbent Indy player amongst the nine players at the start of the game. It was the Hoosiers getting the better of the chances in the first 45 minutes, forcing new Indy Eleven goalkeeper Jon Busch into action on a few occasions in the opening half hour.

However, it was the Circle City side getting on the board first in the 33rd minute on a play started by Ring, as the former Hoosier’s heavy shot from 30 yards was blocked right into the path of Don Smart. The Jamaican midfielder played an early cross to the back post, where a waiting Eamon Zayed leaped to meet the ball eight yards out, nodding home past the recovering IU netminder.

The Indy Eleven lead would last all of five minutes, as an IU attacker found space in the right side of the area and fired a low shot that went through the legs of an Eleven defender and past a shielded Busch to knot things up at 1-1 in the 38th minute.  The Hoosiers could have made it 2-1 late in the half if not for Busch, who made a crucial double save at this right post in the 42nd minute to keep the proceedings even heading into the halftime break.

Mirroring the first half selection, Hankinson went with all returning players at the start of the second have, save for new left back Neil Shaffer.  It was winger Duke Lacroix proving to be a sparkplug in attack across the second 45 minutes, the second year man out of UPenn first getting on the end of a Wojciech Wojcik cross in the 63rd minute, only to see his nodded shot deflected and cleared from the six. In the 76th minute it was Lacroix playing provider to reward Shaffer’s run into the left side of the Hoosiers area, but his promising, side-winding shot would be blocked right off his foot.

IU wouldn’t be able to test Eleven goalkeeper Keith Cardona much in the second half, but the one time he was needed in the 60th minute he was on the spot, racing well off his line and looking big to deflect a shot out for a corner. Defender Greg Janicki also helped out as well three minutes from time, sliding in to block a shot deep inside the Eleven area as Cardona scrambled into position.

Quality Chances Abound, but Goalkeepers Stand Tall in First International Friendly for “Indiana’s Team”

INDIANAPOLIS (Sunday, June 28, 2015) – Today’s historic first international friendly in Indy Eleven club history against Monarcas Morelia saw numerous quality chances created by both teams, but in the end it was top-notch play by four different goalkeepers that highlighted the eventual 0-0 draw.  The duel between the North American Soccer League and Liga MX (Mexican first division) squads unfolded in front of 6,450 fans on a picture-perfect afternoon for soccer at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

In a first half that seesawed back in forth in terms of possession quality attempts, Indy Eleven earned the first chance of quality in the 7thminute by way of Wojciech Wojcik.  Indy defender Jaime Frias sent in a swinging cross from the left corner that found the head of the 6’3” forward, but Wojciech could not keep it on frame, his header drifting over the bar.

Two minutes later it was Wojciech’s running mate up top looking to earn a chance of his own, as Brian Brown made a threatening run into the Morelia penalty area.  The Jamaican international snuck past multiple defenders and looked to be tripped up by a defenseman, forcing his shot to roll weakly to Morelia starting ‘keeper Cirilo Saucedo. Brown pleaded to the center official for a penalty to be called, but his shouts were to no avail.

The “Boys in Blue” continued to hold their own in the midfield as the half went on and found themselves time-after-time with chances in front of the visitor’s net. The most threatening attack of the first half came at the half-hour mark off an Osman Melgares corner that fell to the foot of Brown, who made a lunging attempt to put the ball on frame from six yards out, only to see Saucedo stand his ground and cover up.

Monarcas Morelia would get the bulk of their chances in the half’s final quarter-hour, starting with in the 33rd minute when forward Mauro Cejas slotted a pass ahead of Carlos Ochoa that left him one-on-one with Indy netminder Kristian Nicht. Ochoa made an attempt to slide the ball past Nicht into the bottom right corner of the goal, but Nicht’s extended left leg made the stop and helped the game to its eventual halftime score of 0-0.

Both teams reconstructed their lineups out of halftime and continued to jostle for possession as the second half began, and it would be Morelia who took their possession positively first.  Following a foul by Eleven midfielder Daniel Keller just outside of the penalty area in the 65th minute, the “Monarchs” set up for a free kick from 23 yards out in front of substitute Eleven goalkeeper  Keith Cardona, who saw action last week via loan duty with the USL’s Wilmington Hammerheads.  Morelia midfielder Dieter Villalpando stood over the ball and fired a bouncing shot that had Cardona beat, but fortunately for the home side the ball caromed off the lower left post and just eluded a follow-up run by an onrushing Morelia attacker before being cleared from danger.

Indy Eleven would work its way into the second half and began to push harder for the first goal of the match, evidenced in the 72nd minute when Brown opened up space inside the Morelia box for a shot.  The curling ball nearly got past Morelia substitute ‘keeper Felipe Rodriguez, but he acrobatically dove to push the ball out for an Indy Eleven corner kick that did not cause much harm.

As time in the match wound down, both teams relentlessly made runs into the attacking third of their counterparts for the first goal. Morelia nearly broke the tie in the 84th minute when Oscar Fernandez found space 10 yards out and headed towards goal, but Cardona was not forced to move much and saved it routinely.

Indy Eleven midfielder Osman Melgares would have two tremendous opportunities to move the scoreboard in the closing minutes, first on an 88th minute free kick that curled nicely to the upper right hand corner of the frame, only to see Rodriguez come flying over to prevent the goal by tipping the ball over his goal with one hand.  Then in the 90th minute Megares found himself on the end of a loose ball 10 yards out, but his shot with his weaker right-foot was again saved by the active Rodriguez on his line.

Ultimately, in a highly contested friendly that saw 43 different players compete in the action, neither team’s attacks would produce enough to ripple the back of the net, forcing the historic affair to conclude in an entertaining, yet scoreless draw.

Quality Chances Abound, but Goalkeepers Stand Tall in First International Friendly for “Indiana’s Team”

INDIANAPOLIS (Sunday, June 28, 2015) – Today’s historic first international friendly in Indy Eleven club history against Monarcas Morelia saw numerous quality chances created by both teams, but in the end it was top-notch play by four different goalkeepers that highlighted the eventual 0-0 draw.  The duel between the North American Soccer League and Liga MX (Mexican first division) squads unfolded in front of 6,450 fans on a picture-perfect afternoon for soccer at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

Eleven Doomed by Back-to-Back Eddies' Goals Midway through First Half

INDIANAPOLIS (Saturday, May 10, 2014) – Two back-to-back goals for FC Edmonton midway through the first half proved enough to outlast Indy Eleven in a 2-1 road win at IUPUI's Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Despite getting an own goal in its favor shortly after the pair of Eddies’ tallies, Indy Eleven could not put another past Edmonton ‘keeper John Smits, much to the chagrin of the sellout crowd of 10,285 in Indianapolis.

The game began fairly evenly, with heavily contested back and forth ball movement in the midfield. FC Edmonton’s Mike Banner and Indy Eleven’s Brad Ring both received yellow card cautions in the 10th and 12th minutes, respectively, setting the tone for a match that was chippy throughout.

Ball movement was the downfall for Indy Eleven, allowing Edmonton to net their first goal of the match. A poor back pass by Indy defender Jamie Frias resulted in an unassisted goal by Edmonton’s Daryl Fordyce in the 24th minute. Fordyce placed the ball low and left, rolling past Eleven goalkeeper Kristian Nicht and into the back of the net.

Edmonton continued to press coming out of the kickoff and netted another less than two minutes later. A deflection by Ritchie Jones on a corner kick landed right at the feet of Kareem Moses, who nailed the ball past Nicht, giving Edmonton a lightning fast 2-0 lead.

Down two goals, Indy Eleven moved the scoreboard via an own goal by Edmonton’s Mallan Roberts in the 29th minute. Mike Ambersley got on the end of a free kick 12 yards out and his attempt on goal deflected off Roberts and inside the left post past a stranded Smits.  Indy would hold the momentum for the last 15 minutes to follow but could not capitalize, resulting in the 2-1 score line at the break.

The physical tone from the first half would carry over into the second, as six yellow cards were doled out evenly between the two sides in the second 45 minutes. The quality chances were few and far between, with the first shot testing either netminder coming in the 66th minute when Nicht came up big to stop Massimo Mirabelli’s near-post blast in the 66th minute.

Play began to get stretched in the final 15 minutes, resulting in an entertaining stretch run, starting in the 77th minute when Eleven midfielder Dylan Mares was on the spot to head an effort from Frank Jonke off the Indy goalline. A quirky play heated up the action in the 78th minute of the match, when an Indy Eleven corner was snared by Smits, but only after Indy defender Erick Norales got the ball tangled under his feet, causing him to fall on the Edmonton ‘keeper. An ensuing argument between Smits and an Eddies defender forced the ‘keeper to hold the ball too long and get whistled for a delay of game infraction. However, Smits would atone for his error, collecting the ensuing set piece effort by Kleberson from 15 yards out before it could find the upper left corner.

With Indy Eleven unable to convert on any opportunities in five minutes of added time, the scoreboard remained 2-1 at the end of fulltime. Indy Eleven (0-3-2, 2 pts.) will continue to look for its first win in NASL play next Saturday, May 17, back at Carroll Stadium, when the "Boys in Blue" will entertain the league's other Candaian club and its "NASL Class of 2014" expansion brethren, Ottawa Fury FC.
