INDIANAPOLIS (May 20, 2017) – In their return home following last week’s 3-2 defeat at Miami, “Indiana’s Team” dropped their first contest at Carroll Stadium since 2015 and saw their 21-game home unbeaten streak come to an end in a 2-0 loss to the South Beach side.
The visitors’ first chance of the half came in the 10th minute by way of defender Rhett Bernstein. Earning a corner, Miami’s Vincenzo Rennella whipped in a high cross that was met by the head of Bernstein and sent towards goal only for Indy ‘keeper Jon Busch to smother the opportunity. As Indy built momentum, they worked their first opportunity in front of goal in the 27th minute. Forward Justin Braun took the ball straight off Bernstein on the other end and attempted to round the Miami ‘keeper Daniel Vega, but the shot-stopper got just enough of a finger on it to end the move. One minute later, Miami won a free kick in Indy’s final third and took advantage of the opportunity. As Indy set up their four-man wall, defender Robert Kcira took the set piece quickly and played in forward Vincenzo Rennella. Though defender Kwame Watson-Siriboe attempted to close off the angle, Rennella was able to get his shot away and beat “Buschy” at the far post to open the scoring.
Coming out of the break, Indy deployed their press and sought an important equalizer. In the 52nd minute, Nemanja Vukovic helped win a free kick some 30 yards from goal, but his delivery was headed away by Mares and the chance fell away. Just four minutes later, the “Boys in Blue” got another solid look at goal via Ben Speas, and though the midfielder’s shot had plenty of pace on it, it was placed too near Miami’s Vega and was saved.
“Indiana’s Team” continued to pick their passes as they looked for more quality efforts on goal, but Miami would double their lead in the 72ndminute through another counter attack. On the break, Miami midfielder Michael Lahoud threaded a pass through for the dangerous forward Kwadwo Poku, and the latter made no mistake placing his shot past Busch and in the side of the net.
Indy would find another few looks on goal, but shots by Palmer, Goldsmith, and Braun were all blocked in the final 15 minutes. In the 85thminute, the “Boys in Blue” threatened on the Miami goal as Vukovic curled in a dipping ball towards the back post and Speas. However, as Speas went to jump and head, he lost his balance and was unable to make contact with the pass. Miami would close down the final five minutes plus stoppage and knock off the hosts, ending the 21-game unbeaten streak at “The Mike.”
On the match, goalkeeper Jon Busch was despondent but determined to continue their “fight for three” ahead of next week’s match against FC Edmonton.
“Right now, we aren’t good enough. Last year we played as a team, and it wasn’t always pretty but it was effective and we reached The Championship Final. This year, we just aren’t on the same page; plain and simple, we aren’t good enough right now,” said the veteran.
“Our sights have to turn to next week and FC Edmonton. We’ll go again and look for a response.”
Indy Eleven faces the Canadian side on the road next weekend but returns home to IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium to host Jacksonville Armada FC on Saturday, June 10 at 7:30 P.M. ET.
